Country markets a drawcard

THE Killarney Country Markets held at Canning Park on the first Sunday of the month has been haled a success for its first year on the local market circuit.
The first Killarney market, which was held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in 2012, was so successful that Killarney Area Promotion Association Inc (KAPA) decided to hold them on the first Sunday of each month.
Support from both stallholders and residents has since grown and the markets are now enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
Willow Street business owners Veronica Banditt from Veronica’s on Willow and Sandy Wallace of Gorgeous Coffee Lounge said they were amazed to see people from Brisbane attending the Killarney markets.
The Killarney Country Markets offer local charities and not-for-profit groups the opportunity to supplement their fundraising efforts by holding a stall at no charge.
The locals make a little extra money and delight everyone visiting the market with their handcraft, fruit, bric-a-brac, books, hand crafted furniture, preserves, baking, mysterious crystals and a magnificent assortment of other paraphernalia that is unpacked every month.
“Thanks must be given out local Stallholders and to the Southern Downs Regional Council for their support with permission for the use of the park, provision of power and rubbish bins,” KAPA Secretary and market co-ordinator Joanne Ryan said,
Businesses in the town, struggling from repeated summer flooding events, benefit from the increase in business market visitors bring.
If you are a local or visitor to the area please try to make it along 9am to 1pm on the first Sunday, next market held on 7 July – all profits from the markets are put toward local community projects.
