Young cattle supply high

NUMBERS remained steady and young cattle continued to dominate the selling pens, along with a moderate supply of bullocks and cows.
Not all of the major export processors were present, while there was a fair line-up of buyers in the young cattle section.
A small sample of vealer heifers, ideally suited to the local butcher trade, received very strong demand to average 7c/kg dearer, while the remainder of the young cattle struggled to maintain the prices of the previous sale.
Export slaughter descriptions lost ground in price by 3c to 7c/kg, however greater losses would have occurred without southern processor support.
Calves to restockers made to 167.2c to average 156c/kg. The best of the vealer heifers made to 199.2c, to average 186c, while lighter classes sold around 146c/kg.
A fairly large sample of medium weight yearling steers sold to feeder operators at 168c, with sales to 175c and heavy feeder steers averaged 165c/kg.
Medium weight yearling heifers sold to the trade at 156c, with sales to 169.2c/kg. Heavy weights to the trade averaged 154c and made to 160c/kg.
Bullocks made to 171.2c, to average 163c and full mouth bullocks generally sold around 146c/kg.
Medium weight plain cows averaged 78c and sold to 86.2c/kg. Good heavy cows made to 131.6c with most at 125c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 159.2c/kg.
