Streets closed for practice run

Shoppers will need to negotiate a number of road closures and restrictions today, Saturday 2 December, while a trial run for the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay is carried out in the Warwick Central Business District (CBD).
The Southern Downs is one of only two regions in which this trial will be conducted and will feature the Commonwealth Games branded vehicle convoy with a full police presence.
As a result, there will be road closures in place from 4am to noon today to accommodate the trial run.
The Southern Downs Regional Council says the route was specifically designed to incorporate as many schools as possible and to involve as many school children as possible.
A council spokeswoman said the only streets that will be fully closed to traffic will be Palmerin Street between Fitzroy and Percy streets, Albert Street between Guy and Palmerin and a section of Fitzroy Street located near East State Primary school.
“All other streets will have at least one lane open with plenty of diversions in place, allowing people to still move around the town centre quite easily,” the spokeswoman said.
“The western lanes of Albion Street will remain open for the entire morning, while the eastern lanes of Albion Street will have some minor inconveniences as the convoy comes through on Fitzroy Street.
The convoy will enter Warwick via the O.O. Madsen Bridge, which will be partially closed while the convoy proceeds.”
The convoy trial run will begin at Warwick East State Primary School, and will include stops at Warwick State High School, Warwick Central State Primary School and St Mary’s Primary School.
