Jay’s pollie pedal

Jay Nauss has been cycling the huge Southern Downs electorate during the campaign.

Jay Nauss has been campaigning via pedal-power and while a rank outsider for the seat of Southern Downs, it hasn’t slowed him down.
He dropped in to the Free Times office last week after cycling from Stanthorpe and on his way out to Inglewood.
When asked how he would direct his supporters to distribute their preferences – if he is their ‘number one’ vote – Jay said it was “up to voters to make up their own minds on how to fill in their ballot paper”.
“The voter has the right to number the ballot in any way they want, filling in each square with a number,” he said.
“It’s sad that so many people don’t understand how the preferences work.
“Too many are under the impression that when they hear that so-and-so party has given their preference to such-and-such party that it is something that happens automatically.
“That may be true when voting above the line in a senate election, but for all other voting it isn’t true.
“We need to educate the public on how the voting system works and how they can make up their own mind as to the distribution of preferences.”
