SOUTHERN Downs Steam Railway is back on track and a leased locomotive will puff its way to Wallangarra on Australia Day.
After a major mechanical breakdown during a trip in November the all-volunteer railway has leased a C17 steam engine from the Ipswich Railway Workshops while its own engine undergoes repairs.
The Australia Day journey coincides with a huge weekend in Wallangarra as it hosts a reunion of former workers and suppliers to Anderson’s Meatworks in the border town.
Southern Downs Steam Railway organisers said an interesting range of trips are planned for 2014, including a three-day weekend journey to Goondiwindi in June.
The return trip to Wallangarra on Australia Day, Sunday 26 January, will cost $95 for adults, $80 concessions, with an extra $22 for lunch.
