Wallangarra Ram home a win

In an entertaining but hard fought game the Wallangarra Rams proved too strong for the Stanthorpe Gremlins in their Reserve Grade clash last weekend.
Rams Captain Coach Shane Donnelly got the home side off to a great start when he scored in the corner; the end result of a good backline movement. The Gremlins were quickly into stride, peppering the Rams’ line but a combination of poor ball handling and solid defence saw several plays break down only metres from the line. Gremlins’ key bench player Leon Kareena was introduced into the attack, with immediate results and crashed over to put the visitors on the scoreboard.  George Miles converted to give the Gremlins a 6-4 lead midway through the first half.
The lead was short-lived as Chris Butler scored for the Rams, giving them an 8-6 lead at the break.
Derris Torrens extended the Rams’ lead shortly after half-time. Play in the second half swung from end to end, with both sides failing to capitalise on their opportunities.  The Gremlins were camped in their opponents’ 20 but could not crack the defence.  A brilliant kick and chase by Rams’ Corey Torrens resulted in the match-winning try for Wallangarra.
The win puts the Rams on top of the Reserve Grade ladder. Coach Shane Donnelly, who suffered a calf injury in the second half, said after the game he was pleased with his players’ commitment. “It was a great team win and the boys will take plenty of confidence from the win,” he said.
Gremlins coach Brent Irwin said he was pleased with the overall performance but felt they lacked a bit in the fitness department.
There were plenty of vocal supporters for both sides and, with the A Grade Gremlins side enjoying a bye, it was great to see a large contingent of their supporters on hand to cheer on their Reserve Grade. Best players for the Rams were Brent Humphries, Clayton Schubert and Derris Torrens.  Ben Warr was a standout for the Gremlins.
