Bears spoil the party

One of the largest crowds seen at Fr Ranger Oval in more than 20 years was treated to some spectacular football on Saturday. Unfortunately the Oakey Bears spoilt the party for the Cowboys A Grade who went down 36-22 in a tight game. The young Cowboys side can hold their heads high – they played some wonderful football. The Cowboys returned to the field after half-time with the score 16-6 in favour of the Bears. The visitors were smartly out of the blocks after the break and show away to a 36-10 lead midway through the second half.  But in an entertaining finish to the game the Cowboys came home with a wet sail to go down 36-22 in an entertaining game. It was a great defensive effort from the Cowboys forwards who have been bolstered by the addition of Pommie recruit Garry Ellery. Not only was Ellery good in defence but he also scored a double in his first game for the Cowboys. A great effort considering he only arrived in OZ on Thursday night and barely had a chance to get his bearings before running out on Saturday night. Ellery, who hails from Featherstone, Yorkshire is sure to be a great asset to the Cowboys in the coming months. Not surprisingly Ellery picked up the award for the Best Forward for the Cowboys. Michael Ellis was named Best Back. The Cowboys Under 18’s and reserve grade sides both had good wins against the Bears. The Under 18’s dominated the game to come away with a 64 nil caning of their opponents. The Reserve Grade was a closer affair but the Cowboys prevailed 28-18.
