Stanthorpe school holds sports carnival

Stanthorpe State School held their annual sports carnival recently.
The students were met with surprisingly beautiful weather for both days.
At the conclusion of two intense days of athletic action, Kingfisher were able to continue their good form from last year to defend their title of champion athletic house to go with their cross country win just before the holidays.
With some outstanding house captains working hard, the carnival went like clock work with many close finishes and record attempts.
The final tally of points was Kingfisher 701, Koel 630, Kestrel 543 and Kookaburra 522.
A special mention should go to some great performances from Elissa Colbran in the nine-year-old division for competing in five events and winning all five to end the day with a maximum points haul for her team; she is definitely an athlete to watch in the future.
Kirra Dawson in the 10-year-old division also came close to a clean sweep, picking up a total of 73 points out of a possible 77.
No records were broken on the day, but Desiree Bell in the 13-year-old division joined three other girls now holding the high jump record and to her amazement after the competition had finished she had an extra jump at the new record height and cleared it convincingly, it’s amazing what pressure can do to you.
