Roosters home in a thriller

The Border League season got underway last weekend with the annual Round Robin competition and the debut of the Warwick Rebels.   Eventual winners, the Inglewood Roosters look to be the competition front runners if they can live up to their weekend form.  The Roosters and Gremlins played in the final and the lead see-sawed as play shifted from end to end.  The Gremlins looked to have the match safely in their keeping with only a minute left in the game but the Roosters were not to be denied and equalised with a try under the posts as the full time siren sounded. Inglewood coach Matt Gainey made the conversion giving the Roosters a 14-12 win.  Stanthorpe’s Matt Rouen had a good game in the final scoring the Gremlins’ two tries and looked dangerous each time he had the ball.  Under new captain Jason Wilmot the Gremlins showed they will be in the mix again this season.
The Killarney Cutters look to have a side filled with potential this season while last season’s premiers, Texas had their normal slow start to the season. Texas struggled to put points on the board and the sight if captain coach Jason Edmonstone assisted from the field with what looked to be a serious knee injury would not have done anything for the Terriers faithful.  Edmonstone said after the final he was hoping the injury was not as bad as first thought, “Hopefully it is only strained.  It was twisted in a tackle but I’ll know more as the swelling goes down during the week,” he said. Not surprisingly the Rebels looked short of a run but with each game played they improved and are sure to be competitive as the season progresses.
