Trad resignation prompts re-shuffle amid COVID-19

Jackie Trad (left) has resigned as Deputy Premier and Treasurer.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has unveiled her new-look Cabinet with Steven Miles appointed Deputy Premier, following the resignation of Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad yesterday, Sunday 10 May.

Ms Trad resigned following the announcement of a Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) investigation into allegations she interfered with the appointment of a school principal in her inner Brisbane electorate of South Brisbane.

Ms Trad’s resignation has prompted a partial cabinet re-shuffle but Mark Furner retains the state Agriculture portfolio.

The next Queensland election is due on Saturday 31 October.

Ms Palaszczuk said Steven Miles “will also retain the critical Health and Ambulance Services portfolio after leading Queensland through the COVID-19 crisis”.

Cameron Dick takes on the role of Queensland Treasurer and retains the Infrastructure and Planning portfolio.

Kate Jones assumes responsibility for State Development while continuing as Tourism and Innovation Minister and will retain responsibility for Brisbane’s Cross River Rail.

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford assumes responsibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, while Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher becomes Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing.

The Premier yesterday said she had “moved within 24 hours to deliver a Cabinet focussed on COVID-19 recovery”.

“Queenslanders need strong, stable government and these permanent appointments to my new Cabinet will deliver just that,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“I am 100 per cent focussed and I want my entire Cabinet to be 100 per cent on our COVID-19 recovery.

“This decisive action means we can get on with the job of creating jobs for Queenslanders.”
