Earthworks and associated preparations have been underway at the site at the corner of Fitzroy and Albion Streets.

An announcement about new retail premises at the corner of Fitzroy and Albion Streets in Warwick is expected in the next few weeks.

Work on the vacant site at one of the main highway intersections through town commenced recently, with the Southern Downs Regional Council having approved plans for an 850sqm retail outlet in October last year.

Developer John Kearney this week told the Free Times he will announce the tenant of the new premises within the next couple of weeks, with earthworks proceeding and construction contractor Active Built having established a presence on the site.

The site was originally approved for two buildings intended to house a retail and a drive-through food outlet back in late 2017 but Mr Kearney said his plans had changed since then.

The updated council approval last October – for a ‘bulky goods showroom’ – includes car parking, tree-planting and landscaping and vehicle access into and out of the site via Fitzroy Street.

The land was previously owned by Telstra and used as a car park.

In other commercial property news the Caltex Truck n Travel roadhouse site on the Cunningham Highway north of Warwick is on the market for $6.69 million.

Caltex has a long-term lease and future options over the site – which it does not own – and Gold Coast marketing agents Avanti Commercial say there are no plans to change the tenancy or the operation.

The roadhouse was originally developed and operated for the first 10 years by the Covino family who reside at the Gold Coast, with Caltex taking over around 15 years ago. The Covino family still own the site.

Agent Chris Fort said the 2.96 hectare Caltex Truck n Travel is “one of the larger stand-alone roadhouse sites in south-east Queensland”.

He said the site went on the market earlier this year and has generated interest and enquiries to date with no offer as yet.

“It’s certainly something of a landmark site in the Warwick area,” he said.

Also still on the market is the former Bunnings site on Palmerin Street in Warwick.

The Brisbane-based owners have had it on the market – for sale or for lease, including as multiple commercial tenancies – since the new Bunnings Warwick outlet opened.
