The famous pink Argyle diamond is becoming harder and harder to find, and those who mine for them deep in the Kimberley region of Western Australia including Rio Tinto plan to phase out operations in the latter half of 2020.
The simple reason is that pink diamonds are found so far down in the earth’s crust that searching for them has become less viable for miners, despite their rarity and consequent value.
Production in Australia – one of the world’s few sources of pink diamonds – will come to an end in around September or October of this year.
