The Southern Downs Regional Council has released details of the private water carting operators awarded contracts to transport emergency town water to Stanthorpe when Storm King Dam runs out, forecast to be in December this year or January 2020 at the latest.
As reported online by the Free Times earlier this week the council has awarded 24 operators contracts to cart water via road tanker to Storm King Dam, at a cost estimated by the council of $800,000 per month.
At a media briefing held at the Warwick council chambers on Wednesday of this week, 11 September, Mayor Tracy Dobie said the water would be transported via road from Warwick’s Connolly Dam to new holding tanks being installed at Storm King Dam, requiring between 40 and 50 individual truck movements per day.
The water would be transferred – via a new 280mm poly pipe – from the holding tanks to the main pipeline connecting Storm King Dam to the Stanthorpe water treatment plant at Mount Marley.
The new holding tanks and transfer line at Storm King Dam are currently being installed by Toowoomba firm Newlands Civil Construction at a cost of $1.7 million.
