The Southern Downs Regional Council says the “hearts of towns and villages across the Southern Downs will receive some extra love” with 12 community hall committees successfully securing a share of $250,000 in Federal Government drought relief funding.
Councillor for Communities, Towns and Villages Sheryl Windle said the funding will “ensure community halls remain focal points for the region’s towns and villages while delivering a boost to the economy”.
“It is important to ensure the longevity of the region’s community halls which are often the heart of our smaller and rural towns and villages,” Cr Windle said.
“The funding was made available as part of $1 million in Federal Government funding Southern Downs Regional Council secured through the Drought Communities Programme (DCP).
“Applications for funding were assessed on how the project would deliver benefits to the drought-affected region as well as how it would benefit the community.
“The DCP funds infrastructure and drought relief projects that use local resources, businesses and suppliers to stimulate local community spending and provide long-lasting benefits to the community and their agricultural industries.
“The successful committees can use the grant money to complete much-needed upgrades and projects which may have been planned for some time.”
