The Southern Downs Regional Council is hosting a community meeting to discuss the Wallangarra-Eukey Bushfire Recovery Plan.

SDRC will hold the meeting this coming Tuesday 5 March at the Wallangarra Hall at 6pm where residents can provide SDRC with feedback about how the bushfire impacted the local community and primary producers in the area.

Residents will also learn what steps SDRC, in conjunction with other agencies, plan to take towards recovery as outlined in the Wallangarra-Eukey Bushfire Recovery Plan.

SDRC and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) recently held an initial local recovery strategy meeting following containment of the bushfire to implement a transition from bushfire response operations to recovery.

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said the meeting will provide the community an opportunity to learn how SDRC plans to help the region recover.

“SDRC is responsible for the recovery effort, and council wants to ensure that residents impacted by the bushfire are informed about the recovery process,” Cr Dobie said.

“After conducting initial impact assessments, council has formulated a three stage recovery plan that will look after the needs of the community in the short, medium and long term.

“In the short term, we want to keep residents updated about the timelines for restoring essential services and transport routes, and how residents can access emergency funding to relieve personal hardships the bushfire has caused.

“The meeting will also cover plans for economic recovery, restoring confidence in tourism to the area including Girraween National Park, and how local businesses can improve their resilience to disasters.”
