‘Phantom races’ at Warwick Cup tomorrow

By Jeremy Sollars

The party is still on at the Warwick Cup tomorrow, Saturday 13 October – but without the real horses.

Steady rain over the last 24 hours has forced the Warwick Turf Club and Racing Queensland to move to a ‘phantom’ races format, with the Allman Park track too wet for the seven-race program.

But despite the wet the off-track festivities will still be on – including Fashions on the Field, and bars and the canteen will still be operating.

All VIP ticket holders are still set to enjoy their day out in the Cassels Subaru Trackside Pavilion with fashions, catering from Bluebird Kitchen and live music from Sleeping Dogs all still on.

‘Phantom’ races will be called so punters will still be able to enjoy a flutter.

Tonight’s Calcutta is still on at Allman Park from 6.30pm.

Stewards from the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) inspected the track earlier today and after a further 10mm of rain fell since then have deemed it unsafe for racing.

Racing Queensland says it will work with the Warwick Turf Club to facilitate the two feature races from the abandoned meeting – the Warwick Cup and Warwick Newmarket – being rescheduled at a future race meeting.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting “rain at times” throughout tomorrow and showers continuing well into next week.

A daytime maximum of 16 is forecast tomorrow for Warwick and 14 in Stanthorpe.
