Fatal crash under investigation

A man has died as result of injuries sustained during a single vehicle traffic crash at Aratula yesterday afternoon.

A Queensland Police media statement issued this morning, Tuesday 3 July, says information indicates a truck crashed into a guard rail on the Cunningham Highway just after midday yesterday.

The driver and sole occupant of the truck, a 50-year-old Brisbane man, was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital but passed away overnight.

The vehicle is understood to have been a vintage fire truck.

The Cunningham Highway at Aratula re-opened in both directions around 6pm last night after being closed since the accident, which happened around midday.

Police initially believed the driver of the truck was either working on it on the roadside, or he may have tried to exit the moving vehicle due to brake failure.

The Ipswich Forensic Crash Unit continues to investigate the incident.
