The Southern Downs Steam Railway (SDSR) has announced it’s expanding its rail operations in and around the Darling Downs with its new and exciting ‘Heritage Rail’ tour options.
SDSR president Peter Gregory said the focus from now on is family outings.
“Train rides in up to 100 year old carriages through some of the most beautiful country in the world with history as our foundation, 150 years plus of rail operation on this very rail corridor is what makes Southern Downs Steam Railway the success that it is and unique in the world,” Peter said.
“Family-oriented train rides comprise a number of shorter trips, ie two to four hours with a few around five to six hours for the older children age group with boxed lunches, entertainment on some train rides and commentary on the history of the region were travelling through.
“For the adventurous grey nomads or rail history buffs Southern Downs Steam Railway is currently planning, and about to release two to three day overnight tours to Tenterfield, Goondiwindi and Toowoomba and a range of more adventurous tours to Inglewood, for example, where rail enthusiasts jump on a bus that meets us at the station and takes us our for a brief ride to Texas where we explore the Texas Rail Restoration Groups Rail Precinct and extensive rail infrastructure.
“Lunch is served onsite and you’re bussed back to the train arriving back in Warwick late afternoon.”
“This Sunday 11 May the SDSR will launch its first half-price family-focused train ride to Stanthorpe and return so it’s a much shorter trip for children.
“Children’s tickets are priced at $10, adults $60 and an optional boxed lunch is available for $15
“Gluten-free food options are available.”
Southern Downs Steam Railway’s new website www.sdsr.org.au has more than 12 months of heritage train trip options available for all age groups and booking, making payment and securing your tickets via email is easy. Bookings via phone are still available also for those that need a hand with their tour choice and payment options.
Southern Downs Steam Railway is a volunteer managed and run operation based out of Warwick and boasts being the only volunteer run heritage railway that operates on the open railway with government approval.
