BREAKING: Police last month allegedly located a large number of illegal firearms and ammunition that had been buried on a property near Stanthorpe.
It is alleged detectives had been conducting follow-up investigations in relation to the cold case murder of Philip Carlyle in 1997 when they located 11 handguns, two AR-15 rifles with fully automatic components, three rifle barrels – major components for longarm firearms – and in excess of 10,000 rounds of ammunition.
A police media statement released this morning said the firearms were allegedly located on Saturday 5 August in barrels, buckets and tubing buried on a property 20 minutes outside of Stanthorpe.
A 66-year-old Reedy Creek man has been charged with major firearms offences relating to the possession of illegal firearms and failure to secure ammunition properly.
He is due to face the Southport Magistrates Court today.
Mr Carlyle, 47, an IT marketing manager, was found shot dead in an air-conditioning plant room inside his Gold Coast office in April 1997.
