Truckies under pressure as tyres popped

Transport and Main Roads are investigating.

[ UPDATE 5PM ] Tyre companies in Goondiwindi and Millmerran have been doing a brisk trade today, Monday 22 May, after a load of roofing screws was dropped from a vehicle on the Gore Highway between Millmerran and Goondiwindi.
As reported earlier by the Free Times online, truckies and other motorists who’ve travelled the highway today and on Sunday night are fuming over multiple tyre punctures.
It is now understood the screws – numbering in their thousands – were dropped onto the highway sometime through the night on Sunday or in the early hours this morning.
Tyrepower Goondiwindi say they have repaired punctures on about eight trucks today, while Elborne’s Tyres in Millmerran have seen around half a dozen trucks as well as passenger and other vehicles.
Facebook users have suggested the Toowoomba Regional Council is accepting invoices to cover the cost of tyre repairs but it remains unclear if a council vehicle was responsible for scattering the screws across the highway, while other road users are blaming a speeding tradie or a prank.
There are other unconfirmed reports on social media that a private company has been identified as the culprit and will be forced to cover the cost of tyre repairs.
Comment is being sought from Toowoomba Regional Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
