THE Queensland Police Missing Persons Unit believes missing Warwick woman Tanya Buckland is still alive, more than three years after her disappearance.
Ms Buckland – who would now be aged 40 – was last seen in Warwick on Sunday 11 August 2013.
She disappeared just before her 37th birthday, with her mother having flown to Queensland from the United States to celebrate the occasion.
Her family received a series of photographs of Ms Buckland some time after her disappearance, purportedly sent by her to reassure them of her welfare but not disclosing her whereabouts, other than to say she was in New South Wales.
Belongings of Ms Buckland were later found in the home of accused murderer Vincent O’Dempsey, but police have as yet been unable to establish the connection between the two.
O’Dempsey is in custody awaiting trial over the cold case murders of Barbara McCulkin and her daughters in 1974 in Brisbane, with the trial set down for May this year.
Ms Buckland is one of 200 people listed as Queensland’s “long-term missing”.
But the head of the Queensland Police Missing Persons Unit, Detective Senior Sergeant Damien Powell, says he believes Tanya Buckland is alive and well.
“She told her teenage daughter she was going away for a year and headed into New South Wales,” Sen-Sgt Powell told Brisbane media this week.
“She hasn’t made contact with friends or family since. We believe she is alive.
“It’s hard to say (why she left), but obviously all our inquiries have drawn a blank. There is no evidence of her (being alive) but she may well have the capabilities to use a different name or work for cash in hand.
“It’s just concerning that she hasn’t contacted her daughter.”
Ms Buckland’s family maintain a Facebook page called ‘Help Find Tanya Buckland’.
Anyone with information which may assist in locating Tanya Buckland is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
