David gives club a lift

A SPECIAL presentation to a special club member was made at the Southern Downs Rifle Club on Sunday. Free Times photographer TERRY WEST headed out there to get some shots – pardon the pun – and the club contributed the following article … and they always welcome new members …

THE Southern Downs Rifle Club operates from its range in Connolly Dam Road, Risdon. The range was built in 1942 by American troops stationed in the district and used as a training ground and until recently the original target hoists were still in use.
On Sunday 18 December, before the regular shoot, a special vote of thanks was given to David Norman, the current president, who has worked tirelessly to give the club five new target hoists and frames. In a tremendous endeavour he designed the hoists, arranged and collected all the materials required, manufactured and installed the five target hoists and frames with minimal outside assistance.
He has done all of this gaining no recompense for his labours and contributing many of the incidental costs. The club had applied for a grant but was unsuccessful and under the circumstances – Dave is 85 years old – they decided to go ahead anyway.
A sign was made up by Signs R Us, who incidentally donated it free of charge, acknowledging the work and it will be permanently fixed at the butts as a constant reminder of what the club owes Dave.
Afterwards, the shoot proceeded. A total of 16 shooters turned up on the day and were shooting from 500 yards with the second round being a ‘fly’ shoot and a great time was had by all concerned. Being the festive season this was followed with a barbecue and a lucky dip prize-giving for everyone, with the top three shooters of the day being Mark Paroz, Bob Tyllyer and Bruce McAllan.
Anyone interested in long distance target shooting is welcome to come along. They shoot every Sunday morning signing on at 7.30am and commence shooting at 8am. The format is at 300 yards on the first week of the month, with 400 yards, 500 yards and 600 yards in the following weeks.
