It’s a dung deal as council moves to muck out yards

By Jeremy Sollars

THE old saying “where there’s muck there’s money” is alive and well, with the Southern Downs Regional Council set to offer animal manure from the Warwick Saleyards for public sale.
With an abundance of cattle and sheep manure ever present following sale days the council has seen the opportunity to commercialise it, with an agreement with a contractor for its removal no longer in place.
A report to the November council meeting says the waste has been “accumulating” for some months and it’s time to move it on.
Members of the public will soon be able to pick up a tonne of manure for just $5 a throw but you’ll be responsible for loading and transport.
“Following the weekly cattle sale every Tuesday the cattle yards at the Warwick Saleyards are cleaned out and the manure is dumped in a holding yard,” the council report stated.
“The sheep yards are cleaned out periodically and the waste from the truck wash is held in the same holding yard.
“A risk assessment will need to be completed by council’s safety officers to ensure the safety of any member of the public who comes and collects the animal waste.
“This would not increase the saleyard’s revenue significantly, however it would assist in removing a waste product at very little expense to council.”
