Westy’s eye on the weather

SATURDAY is shaping up as a wet one for the Southern Downs and Granite Belt but Sunday should be fine, according to Free Times weather commentator Terry West. Here’s Westy’s Weather outlook for the next few days …

Summary for the rest of Thursday 20 October …
As the high pressure system that has been keeping us dry over the last few days moves east in the Tasman Sea today a ridge will develop along the Queensland coast. This may give the chance for some showers to develop near the coast and ranges. A small surface trough may develop just the west of the Southern Downs and may add to the instability and showers overnight.

Friday 21 October
It should be clear with some light cloud. Very little chance of rain on Friday as the high makes its way across the Tasman and a ridge firms along the Queensland coast. Winds should be light from the east-north-east for most of the day. Temps – max 25c, min 11c

Saturday 22 October
A vigorous upper and surface trough system will start to move from the western parts of Queensland on Friday and into our region by Saturday morning. This will bring rain and the chance of a storm to the Southern Downs and Granite Belt during the late afternoon and evening. These showers may continue into the night and should clear by early Sunday morning around sunrise. Winds should be light to moderate from the north-east during the morning but will swing to the south-west by late afternoon. Temps – max 24c, min 12c

Sunday 23 October
Showers should cease early Sunday morning as the upper and surface trough system moves east of the coast. The area will stay overcast as the upper levels of the atmosphere remain saturated. There is a very slight chance of a light misty shower toward the ranges during the day. Winds should be moderate from the east but may gust from the west occasionally. This may keep the ’feels like’ air temperature cool. Temps – max 19c, min 9c

Weekend summary …
Friday and Saturday should remain fine but some cloud may hang around. Saturday afternoon from 4pm on there is a chance of rain and storms into Sunday morning. Rain should ease and most likely stop by 7am Sunday morning but it will remain overcast and may be cool due the wind chill.
