Orienteering is on target

Orienteering returns to Warwick.

WITH the Australian Titles being held in Stanthorpe in a month’s time, orienteering makes a timely return to Warwick this weekend.
Private grazing land adjacent to Sandy Creek, below Leslie Dam outside Warwick, will be the venue for the event organised by the local Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Club.
Club publicity officer Liz Bourne said the area contained an interesting mixture of open paddocks with scattered areas of granite and was suited to beginners as well as experienced orienteers.
With the Australian Orienteering Championships coming up in Stanthorpe at the beginning of October, Ms Bourne said that numbers at Sunday’s event would be boosted by a group of juniors participating in a training weekend in the lead-up to this major event.
“Local people who would like to find out more about the sport of orienteering are most welcome to come along on Sunday and try it out,” she said.
Ms Bourne said that as well as courses for more experienced orienteers, the event would also have a short, easy course suitable for beginners and instruction on the basic map reading and navigational skills would also be available from club members.
“No special gear is required although sturdy footwear, a hat and water bottle are recommended. Orienteering compasses may be borrowed at the event,” she said
Starting times will be from 9-11am and the assembly area will be in the picnic area at the base of the dam which is situated 14km west of Warwick.
