Heavens open, but more rains needed

HEAVY rains across the Southern Downs in the last week have filled creeks to overflowing and caused minor flooding in several areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology recorded that areas around Warwick copped the heaviest rains in the state in the three days to 25 August, with two to three inches falling in most areas, while some recorded four inches and more.
Good falls were also recorded into the Granite Belt.
Weather stations at Warwick and Scots College recorded close to three inches over the three days, with two inches falling on Wednesday 24 August alone.
Dalveen recorded the highest three-day total in the region, with close to 5.5 inches.
Heavy falls of around three inches were also recorded at Yangan, Allora and Killarney.
The Queen Mary Falls, near Killarney, was looking spectacular with flood waters cascading down the rockface.

More spring rain is desperately required to replenish Leslie Dam, which sits at 13.1 per cent capacity – up 1.3 per cent after the rains – according to the bureau.
The last few years of drought have reduced the dam’s storages from 100 per cent in 2011 – the biggest drop occurring in 2014, when the levels went from 60 per cent in January to under 30 per cent in December.

Weather watcher Terry West captured some of the localised flooding and creek flows into Leslie Dam.
