AUGUST is a busy month for seniors living on the Southern Downs with Seniors Week being celebrated from 13 to 21 August.
This year’s theme is ‘It’s on for Young and Old’, and is an opportunity for residents of all ages to join together and celebrate the contribution of older people in our community.
Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Tracy Dobie said that in recognition of the growing support and interest across the region in holding seniors week events, the council has again designated August as ‘Seniors Month’ on the Southern Downs.
“Over the last few years, with so many events offered by groups and clubs spilling either side of Seniors Week, it seemed fitting to dedicate August as ‘Seniors Month’ in our region,” Cr Dobie said.
“This year sees another jam-packed calendar of events throughout August.
“There’s fitness, croquet and orienteering, internet safety courses, art and craft exhibitions, military memorabilia displays, music and entertainment galore, morning teas and luncheons, and much more … something for everyone.
“So many seniors in our community give so much, and it’s great to be able to give something back.
“We have seniors that are still working. We have seniors that are the backbone of volunteering and the numerous community groups in the region. And, we have a lot of seniors that are primary caregivers for a lot of grandchildren.
“They really do play a full and active role in our community and that’s why it’s so important to celebrate what they do in Seniors Month.
“I certainly hope to get along to some of the events, and I’d really encourage people from all age groups to get out and celebrate the important role our seniors play by attending as well.”
Residents will be spoilt for choice with two seniors’ expos to be held across the region again this year.
The Granite Belt Seniors Expo ‘It’s on for Young and Old’ will be held at the Uniting Church Hall, 111 High Street, Stanthorpe, on 17 August from 10am to 1pm, and will offer a range of entertainment and information, along with a free morning tea and lunch, and there will also be a live broadcast by TenFM community radio.
The 10th annual Seniors Leisure and Lifestyle Expo will be held at the Warwick Senior Citizens Hall, corner of Guy and Albert streets, on August 18 from 10am to 1pm, showcasing local organisations and services that contribute to the health and wellbeing of seniors across the region, and there will be plenty of food and entertainment on offer.
“These expos are a wonderful opportunity for groups and services to provide information for people over 55 to live a vibrant and active life in their community,” Cr Dobie said.
It’s on for Young and Old, and the council urges older residents to get out and get active this Seniors Month.
