THREE years ago, Ken Hartnett received the devastating news that he had prostate cancer.
Following the diagnosis, he had eight weeks of radiation and is now cancer-free.
Mr Hartnett, who lost his mother to cancer, still has check-ups every six months and continues to hope for the best.
It’s with that optimism and determination that he and his wife Bernadette hope to raise awareness and funds for their Cancer Council Relay for Life team Santa’s Little Helpers.
Ms Hartnett has organised a Zumba For Life event this Sunday with qualified instructors from Zumba Fitness Fun Toowoomba.
Mr Hartnett said his wife was “mad keen” about the fitness dance class and thought it would be an enjoyable way to raise funds for an important cause.
“It’s a fun event for men and women of all ages which will run for an hour,” Mr Hartnett said.
“Zumba instructors have dedicated their time to it, and we hope to get as many people out as possible – 50 to 100 would be nice!”
Santa’s Little Helpers raised $3000 last year for the Cancer Council, and the team hopes to exceed that amount for the Relay for Life in September this year.
“We always want to get bigger and better and brighter,” he said.
The Hartnetts volunteer with the Cancer Council and believe it is an extremely important organisation.
“I have been treasurer of the local Cancer Council for 12 years,” Mr Hartnett said.
“I do appreciate it.”
Zumba for Life will be held at Redback’s Football Club, Jackie Howe Drive, in Warwick on 13 April. People are encouraged to arrive at 9.30am for a 10am start. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children, aged 10 to 15. Kids under 10 are free.
